Beyond raw speed tests, NordVPN simply felt fast in day-to-day use. Web browsing while connected to the VPN was indistinguishable from regular browsing. I could stream YouTube and Netflix in 1080p and 4K without buffering. Downloading a 2GB file over NordVPN (via a U.S. server) took virtually the same time as without the VPN. Even when I connected to servers halfway across the world (such as Asia from my location), NordVPN maintained impressive speeds - often still hitting 85-95 Mbps out of 100. This aligns with other reviewers' findings that NordVPN maintains high speeds across global servers with minimal drops, largely thanks to NordLynx and the service's robust infrastructure.

A crucial test for any VPN today is whether it can unblock popular streaming services and allow access to geo-restricted content. NordVPN excelled in this area during my evaluation. I tried multiple streaming platforms - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and a few region-specific services - and NordVPN reliably bypassed geo-blocks on all of them.

Netflix

NordVPN is often touted as a great VPN for Netflix, and my tests confirmed it. This means even though NordVPN doesn't label certain servers explicitly as "Netflix" or "streaming" servers, all servers I tested were able to access streaming sites thanks to specialized DNS routing. This is very convenient - I didn't have to hunt for specific servers for different services; I could just connect normally and stream away.

Other Streaming Platforms

Beyond Netflix, NordVPN also gave me access to BBC iPlayer, which is notoriously difficult for VPNs to handle. My London server connection let me stream BBC iPlayer content (like BBC One shows and live streams) as if I were in the UK. NordVPN is actually one of the few VPNs that still consistently works with BBC iPlayer in 2025. I also tested Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu by connecting to appropriate countries (e.g., US server for Hulu and Disney+, a German server for German Amazon Prime content, etc.). In each case, NordVPN unblocked the service and allowed high-quality playback. There were no proxy errors or VPN blocks encountered during my tests. Streaming Speed & Quality

Unblocking is one thing, but streaming quality is just as important. NordVPN passed this test with flying colors. Thanks to the strong speeds noted earlier, I could stream in HD and Ultra HD without buffering. Even connecting to servers across the world, the VPN maintained enough bandwidth for high-definition video. For instance, streaming from a Japan server (to access Japanese Netflix) still gave me around 90 Mbps, which is more than enough for 4K video which typically needs 25 Mbps or less. I never had to lower quality or suffer from constant loading screens. NordVPN's low latency and fast data transfer ensured that videos started quickly and ran consistently. As a viewer, I wouldn't have known a VPN was in use if not for the expanded content library at my fingertips.

SmartPlay DNS

NordVPN's secret sauce for streaming is its SmartPlay feature, enabled by default. SmartPlay is essentially an intelligent DNS service integrated with the VPN that automatically handles many geo-restriction bypass steps in the background. From a user perspective, you don't have to do anything special - just connect to the country you need. NordVPN's SmartPlay will often seamlessly reroute the necessary service requests. This is why, as noted, every server tested was able to access streaming sites. It removes the trial-and-error of finding a "working" server for Netflix or others. For example, some providers have a handful of servers that can get Netflix, and if you're not on one of those, you're out of luck. With NordVPN, virtually any U.S. server I tried worked for Netflix US, and similarly for other regions. This broad compatibility is a huge plus for streaming enthusiasts.

Torrenting and P2P

While not exactly "streaming," many users also care about P2P file-sharing performance. NordVPN permits torrenting on designated P2P servers, and it offers thousands of them (over 5,000 servers optimized for P2P traffic). In the NordVPN app, P2P servers are clearly marked, or you can simply try to use a BitTorrent client and NordVPN will automatically connect you to a suitable server for torrenting. In my tests, NordVPN was excellent for torrenting: downloads were fast and stable. I downloaded a large (legal) Linux ISO via BitTorrent while connected to a NordVPN P2P server in the Netherlands. The speeds ramped up quickly and stayed high throughout, comparable to my direct connection speeds.

My IP address remained hidden (I checked using a torrent IP checking tool), confirming that NordVPN properly proxied all torrent traffic. NordVPN also supports a SOCKS5 proxy which advanced users can configure in their torrent client for potentially even faster speeds (though note that a SOCKS5 proxy alone doesn't encrypt traffic). Thanks to its strong speeds and security, NordVPN is often rated as one of the best VPNs for torrenting, and I can see why. I encountered no throttling or disconnects, and my ISP could not detect or block the torrenting since everything was encrypted through NordVPN.

In summary, NordVPN is a streamer's dream. It unlocks basically any content you want, delivers it without buffering, and does so in a user-friendly way with no special setup required. Whether you want to catch up on your favorite show while abroad or download large files securely, NordVPN proves itself as a top performer.

Security and Privacy Features

Security is the core of any VPN, and NordVPN truly shines here with a comprehensive suite of features designed to keep your data safe and private. I delved into NordVPN's security mechanisms during my tests - including encryption strength, VPN protocols, leak protection, and extra tools - and was very impressed with the level of protection NordVPN provides, all while remaining easy to use.

Encryption Standards

NordVPN secures data with AES-256 encryption, which is the industry gold standard and considered virtually unbreakable by today's technology. In simpler terms, this is the same level of encryption used by government agencies and top security services worldwide. When using the NordLynx protocol, NordVPN employs a similarly robust ChaCha20 cipher (as WireGuard relies on ChaCha20 instead of AES-256). Both AES-256 and ChaCha20 are extremely secure ciphers. During my usage, I felt confident that all my internet traffic was strongly encrypted - whether I was on public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop or accessing sensitive accounts, NordVPN created a secure tunnel that outsiders (like hackers or even my ISP) could not peek into.

VPN Protocols

NordVPN offers a variety of VPN protocols, which are essentially different methods to form the encrypted tunnel. In the app settings, I found options for OpenVPN (UDP/TCP), NordLynx, and even a newer NordWhisper protocol on some platforms. By default, NordVPN auto-selects the best protocol, which usually gave me NordLynx for speed. OpenVPN is available if needed - it's a tried-and-true protocol known for security, though a bit slower. I tested both: OpenVPN worked fine but had a bit more latency and a small speed hit (as mentioned earlier). NordLynx was my go-to for everyday use due to its excellent balance of speed and security. NordWhisper is a proprietary protocol NordVPN built (currently aimed at very specific scenarios like restrictive networks). In one test, I tried NordWhisper when simulating a restricted network (using some firewall rules), and it managed to connect where other protocols were blocked - albeit at slower speeds. This shows NordVPN's versatility; even in tough environments (like a campus or work network blocking VPNs, or heavy censorship regions), there's likely a way to get connected. Most users, however, will stick to NordLynx or OpenVPN which NordVPN handles automatically.

No-Logs Policy and Audits

A VPN's privacy promise is only as good as its logging policy. NordVPN has a strict no-logs policy, meaning it pledges not to record or store any information about your online activities or connections (such as what websites you visit, what data you transfer, etc.). This is crucial - even if someone were to demand data from NordVPN, there should be nothing sensitive to hand over. To verify these claims, NordVPN has undergone multiple independent audits. Impressively, NordVPN's no-logs policy has been audited five separate times as of 2025, including by reputable firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte. The most recent audit (2024) again confirmed that NordVPN's servers and systems are not storing user-identifying logs. As a privacy-conscious user, this gives me a lot of confidence. Few VPNs have gone this far to prove their privacy commitments.

NordVPN is based in Panama, which is an excellent jurisdiction for privacy since Panama has no data retention laws and is outside the intelligence-sharing alliances (like Five Eyes). So from the ground up, NordVPN is designed to minimize data collection and be in a place where they're not compelled to log. During my tests, I also ran DNS leak and WebRTC leak tests to see if any of my information was inadvertently exposed. NordVPN passed these tests easily - no DNS leaks (it uses its own DNS servers to handle my requests) and no IP leaks via WebRTC. This means that even advanced leak vectors didn't reveal my true IP or browsing to prying eyes; NordVPN successfully cloaked those as well.

Kill Switch

NordVPN includes a kill switch feature on its apps. I consider this a vital security tool: if the VPN connection ever drops unexpectedly, a kill switch will block all internet traffic until the secure tunnel is restored, preventing your data or real IP from leaking out in the interim. I tested NordVPN's kill switch by simulating a sudden disconnection (e.g., turning off my Wi-Fi briefly, or forcing the NordVPN app to close).

In each case, my internet was instantly cut off when the VPN disconnected - the kill switch worked perfectly, blocking traffic until I reconnected the VPN. There are slight variations by platform: on Windows and macOS, NordVPN has a built-in kill switch you can toggle; on iOS, the kill switch is always on (Apple doesn't allow it to be turned off, which is actually safer); on Android, NordVPN leverages Android's "Always-On VPN" and "Block connections without VPN" settings to serve as a kill switch. The only minor gap is that on Android you have to enable this in system settings (NordVPN prompts you to do so), whereas some other VPNs have an in-app kill switch. But functionally, it achieves the same result - my Android stayed leak-proof in testing when I enabled the always-on VPN option. Overall, I was happy with NordVPN's kill switch behavior on all devices; it adds peace of mind that no accidental exposure will happen if the VPN connection falters.

Threat Protection (Built-in Security Suite)

NordVPN now goes beyond just VPN tunneling with a feature called Threat Protection, and an enhanced version Threat Protection Pro available on certain plans. This acts like a mini security suite by blocking ads, trackers, malicious websites, and even malware downloads. I found this integration quite useful. With Threat Protection on, many intrusive ads were filtered out during my browsing, and known harmful sites were blocked proactively. In one test, I attempted to download a known test malware file (the EICAR test file, which is a safe dummy file used to test antivirus behavior). NordVPN's Threat Protection immediately caught and blocked the download, effectively behaving like an antivirus would.

It's important to note that this feature doesn't replace dedicated antivirus software - in NordVPN's own admission it caught around 60% of ads in tests and obviously can't handle the full spectrum of malware like a specialized program. But it's still a valuable extra layer of defense that runs whether or not you're connected to a VPN server (on supported platforms like Windows). I especially appreciated this always-on aspect: even when I wasn't actively using the VPN for connectivity (say I was on my home network briefly without a VPN), the Threat Protection was still keeping my browsing safer by blocking trackers and sketchy domains. This kind of holistic protection is increasingly unique to NordVPN - it's one of the reasons NordVPN is sometimes called more than just a VPN, almost a privacy powerhouse with multiple protective features.

Threat Protection is super easy to use; it's basically a single switch in the app. I turned it on and just let it run in the background. During normal use I noticed fewer ads and no unwanted pop-ups, which was a nice quality-of-life improvement. If you get NordVPN's higher-tier plans (which include NordPass password manager and NordLocker cloud storage), Threat Protection is upgraded to "Pro" which adds the malware blocking and more robust phishing protection. I had the full version in my test and it worked as advertised, stopping me from reaching a couple of fake phishing sites (I tried visiting a known phishing page and NordVPN blocked it outright, warning me).

Double VPN and Onion Over VPN

For users who want extra anonymity, NordVPN provides specialty servers. Double VPN servers route your traffic through two VPN servers sequentially (for example, you connect first to a VPN server in Sweden, and from there to another VPN server in the UK, and then to the internet). This double-hop encryption means even if one server were somehow compromised, your data would still be safe behind the second server. As mentioned earlier, using Double VPN will slow down your speed significantly, and I noticed that in my trial. Therefore, I only recommend it for specific cases - perhaps if you're doing something very sensitive and want that additional layer, or to chain through two regions. NordVPN makes it easy to select Double VPN by listing it under specialty servers; I tried the Canada->US route and the connection, while slower, still worked fine and indeed masked my route through two countries.

Onion Over VPN is another specialty option NordVPN offers, which combines the VPN with the Tor network (Onion network) for ultimate privacy. Normally, accessing the Tor network requires a special Tor Browser. NordVPN's Onion Over VPN servers let you connect to a regular VPN server that then automatically routes your traffic into the Tor network. I tested this by connecting to an Onion-over-VPN server in the Netherlands. Once connected, I could access .onion sites on the dark web using my normal browser - NordVPN was transparently handling the Tor connection in the background. This worked well, though like Double VPN, it was quite slow (Tor is inherently slow due to multiple relays). It's not something you'd use for bandwidth-heavy tasks, but for maximum anonymity it's a useful feature. NordVPN having built-in Tor access is convenient and saves the step of launching a separate Tor browser. It's worth noting that only some servers (e.g., in Switzerland and the Netherlands) are designated Onion servers, so you will want to pick those specifically if you need this function.

Obfuscated Servers

If you are in a country or network environment where VPN usage is blocked or flagged, NordVPN's obfuscated servers come into play. These servers (available when using OpenVPN protocol) disguise VPN traffic to look like regular HTTPS internet traffic. This helps in places with heavy censorship or VPN bans, like certain restrictive regimes or simply offices/schools that block VPN connections. NordVPN lists obfuscated servers in about 16 countries (including US, UK, Canada, Japan, etc.). I did a basic test by connecting to an obfuscated server and verifying that the traffic signature was indeed not recognizable as a VPN. While I wasn't able to travel to a country like China for a live test, reports indicate NordVPN can work in such environments if you alternate between obfuscated servers and the NordLynx/NordWhisper protocols. NordVPN itself is careful to note they don't guarantee operation in very restrictive countries (because governments are constantly trying to block VPNs), but at least they provide the tools to have a fighting chance. For most users, obfuscated servers won't be needed, but it's good to know NordVPN has this capability if you ever do need it.

Additional Security Notes

A couple of advanced points I noted in my research: NordVPN has begun implementing post-quantum cryptography algorithms in preparation for future threats from quantum computers. This is more forward-looking than immediately practical, but it shows NordVPN's security team is thinking ahead to ensure encryption stays unbreakable in the long term. NordVPN also supports Meshnet (discussed more later) which uses encrypted tunnels between devices, and it underwent a second infrastructure security audit in 2024 to examine the overall security of its server architecture. All of these factors paint a picture of a VPN provider that is extremely serious about security and privacy. In my own use, I felt very safe with NordVPN - I encountered no leaks, no security incidents, and my identity remained protected at all times.

Server Network and Infrastructure

NordVPN's server network is one of the largest and most diverse I've seen in the VPN industry, which brings significant benefits to users. When I opened the NordVPN app, I was presented with a world map and a list of countries to choose from - and the list was impressively long. NordVPN currently offers thousands of servers worldwide, ensuring that users can always find a nearby server for the best performance or a far-flung server for accessing content abroad.

As of 2025, NordVPN boasts over 7,000 servers globally. Many sources cite slightly different figures (NordVPN is constantly adding new servers), but it's in the range of 7,000+. This is one of the largest server fleets in the VPN market. To put it in perspective, few competitors come close: Surfshark has around 3,200 servers, ExpressVPN about 3,000, and even large providers like CyberGhost and PIA hover in the few thousands. NordVPN's abundance of servers means each server tends to be less crowded, and you have a vast selection if one isn't performing optimally. Throughout my tests, this huge network paid off - no matter where I wanted to connect, there were multiple options available.

Global Coverage (Countries & Locations)

NordVPN's servers span over 110 countries worldwide. In fact, by late 2024 NordVPN expanded to around 118 countries and continues to grow. This global coverage is outstanding and essentially covers every region: North, Central, and South America; all across Europe; Asia-Pacific; Africa; and the Middle East. For example, NordVPN has servers in countries that many VPNs often neglect, like those in Eastern Europe or smaller Asian nations. It even provides virtual server locations to cover regions with restrictive laws - for instance, NordVPN offers an "India" connection that actually uses servers in Singapore to still give Indian IP addresses without compromising privacy under India's data retention rules. I found servers available in all the countries I frequently need (US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, etc.) and many I didn't expect. Such broad country selection is great for unblocking content and also means you can likely find a server close to wherever you are traveling.

During my usage, I tried connecting to about two dozen different countries, and every connection succeeded quickly. NordVPN also supports city-level selection in some regions (for example, within the US you can pick servers in multiple states or cities). This can be useful if you want a specific locale (say, to watch a local sports blackout or access a city-specific site). The server list in the app shows not just countries but in some cases specific server locations and even the server load percentage, which is helpful for picking a fast option.

Server Infrastructure (Security and Speed)

NordVPN's infrastructure is built for both speed and security. All servers are running on RAM-only (volatile memory) rather than hard drives. This is an important security measure: RAM-only servers wipe all data when they are powered off or rebooted, meaning no residual user data can persist. It also prevents any data from being physically taken from a data center - if someone were to seize a NordVPN server, there would be no logs or configuration files on a hard drive to examine, as everything runs in memory. Many top VPNs have moved to RAM servers in recent years, and NordVPN was among the early adopters of this practice, especially following a security incident in 2018 (more on that soon). As a user, I consider this a big plus for privacy. NordVPN also owns and colocates a large portion of its servers hardware (rather than renting all of them), which gives them greater control over security and performance.   • P2P Servers: Optimized for peer-to-peer traffic (torrenting). These are widely distributed, and using them I got excellent upload/download rates. NordVPN automatically routes P2P activities to these servers if you connect elsewhere, which is nice.
  • Double VPN Servers: As discussed, these route through two servers for extra security. NordVPN provides various country pairings (for example, France->UK, US->Canada, etc.). They are clearly labeled.
